I'm a sole trader - am I elibible for the Government's parental leave scheme, and what is the income threshold?

Monday, January 23, 2012

Hi Jen! My husband and I are thinking about starting a family, and I'm wondering whether we can afford it!  As a business owner, am I eligible to participate in the Government funded paid parental leave scheme?  My business is a sole trader structure - do I need to change it to an incorporated company?  And is the income threshold based on my income, or our combined household income?  Help!! Ask more. Be more assertive. Be confident. Advice that every woman receives, that just DOES.NOT.WORK at work

Monday, January 16, 2012

I don't know if it's got anything to do with the new year, but there's been a pile of "helpful advice" articles of late on what women should do to get what they (presumably) need in terms of their pay, position and profile.  Build relationships and get a male mentor.  Learn to sing your own praises. Be more of this, less of that. Read More

Are people your greatest asset? Then your executive and board must include people expertise, and that probably means more women

Friday, November 11, 2011

I have a question:  if people really are the greatest asset in any business (as many would say), why is it that HR professionals are paid less than those who manage the financial, property and operational assets of almost any business? Why do the so-called "soft skills" and "support roles" harbor less pay, promotional prospects and prestige than the functional and “line” roles, and does it have anything to do with the former being mostly held by women?  Read More

“Mother guilt” at work… why I loath this term and why it’s time to do away with it!

Thursday, October 13, 2011

It could be just my interpretation, but I loath the term “mother guilt”.  It seems to me that labels like this do nothing to support the self-confidence of mothers – and it’s certainly not a draw card for career-minded women deciding whether and when to embark on parenting. Read More

Go ahead, make a ridiculous pay request... and receive a 9 per cent pay hike!

Thursday, September 15, 2011

News this week from Harvard Daily Stat has confirmed my opinion that there's no place for being sensible when it comes to negotiating your salary!  In this study, job candidates who jokingly requested ridiculously high salaries received 9% higher wage offers than candidates who made no such jokes, according to a simulation conducted by Todd J. Thorsteinson of the University of Idaho.  Read More

Equal Pay Day: Who really cares whether men and women are paid the same, anyway?

Thursday, September 01, 2011

I’m supposed to be at an Equal Pay Day event right now… but I was so cranky that women still earn 17% less than men in equivalent roles that I decided to stay home.  Instead of hearing more women speak about how unjust the gap is, and decree another call to action for the female audience to demand change, I took my frustrations out on the garden.  After much hacking and pruning of the hedge I’ve let off enough steam to write this post, which I need to do because I’m speaking next week at a BPW luncheon in Geelong on this very topic... even though I’m quite convinced that no one really cares about pay equity anyway. Read More

Ambition is not a dirty word for women in emerging markets

Do you describe yourself as very ambitious? We know that 3 out of 4 women in the sphinxx network describe themselves as ambitious... but very ambitious?  Turns out professional ambition is extraordinarily high among women in the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, as well as in the United Arab Emirates, say Sylvia Ann Hewlett and Ripa Rashid, authors of Winning the War for Talent in Emerging Markets.  Read More
