Pink Ribbon Day for breast cancer research – the fourth Monday in October

Saturday, January 03, 2009

Recent Australian cancer survival data demonstrates continuing progress against breast cancer. Breast cancer five-year relative survival has increased from 72 per cent in 1982-1986 to 88 per cent in 1998-2004. However, much more remains to be done.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is the only Australian not-for-profit organisation funding research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. To date, $55 million has funded 230 research programs and ultimately NBCF aim to find the causes giving us the potential to prevent breast cancer. Along the way, NBCF are improving the quality of life of people diagnosed with breast cancer.

How can you help? This year, the NBCF has made it easier than ever to show your support of breast cancer research. There are many things you can do - host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, purchase an item from the Pink Ribbon Shop, sell merchandise, participate in the Dove Pink Star Walk or the Mother's Day Classic, become a volunteer or just make a pink purchase - and more!

Don't forget to mark your diary and wear a Pink Ribbon or wristband on the fourth Monday in October to show your support in raising funds for breast cancer research. It is the signature day of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and throughout October (Breast Cancer Month) the Pink Ribbon Campaign aims to celebrate the achievements of breast cancer research and raise additional funds.

A number of retail outlets around Australia will be stocking merchandise or show your support by visiting www.pinkribbon.org.au
